Buyer Beware: Soaps and Sanitizers May Increase Absorption of Dangerous BPA

how to avoid bpa exposure

Story at-a-glance

  • Bisphenol-A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical found in countless everyday products for which there is strong evidence of negative health effects
  • Using hand sanitizer may change the permeability of your skin and increase your absorption of BPA, especially from cashier thermal printed receipts commonly coated with BPA
  • BPA has been found in measurable amounts in canned goods using BPA in the can liner, increasing your risk of exposure
By Dr. Mercola
Bisphenol-A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical found in countless personal care and plastic products, including the lining of canned goods, nonstick food containers, water bottles and even cashier's receipts. It was first created in 1891, but didn't appear in manufactured products until the 1950s.
Although the American Chemistry Council, an industry trade group, has consistently insisted BPA is safe,1,2 this is contrary to the weight of evidence. The chemical has been banned from use in sippy cups and other baby products due to potential health risks to infants.3Manufacturers prize BPA as an additive to plastics as it makes the final product more resilient and often transparent. BPA resins are also used to keep metal from corroding. It's used in an estimated 75 percent of canned goods sold in the U.S.
Despite strong scientific evidence of negative health effects, and relentless health advocacy group work to remove the chemical, the industry was valued at over $13 billion in 2013 and is expected to reach $20 billion by 2020.4 In response to consumer concerns some food companies have agreed to stop using BPA.
However, this may not have the effect you expect, as research demonstrates these substitute chemicals may cross the placental barrier, increasing the toxic load on infants,5 and may have similar endocrine-disrupting effects on adults since they are nearly identical chemical compounds. Making matters worse, certain soaps and sanitizers may increase your absorption of BPA, making it all the more dangerous.

What's the Problem With BPA?

Primarily, BPA is a strong endocrine disruptor. Basically, this means the chemical is similar in structure to a natural hormone —  in this case, estrogen —  and then interferes with the function of the hormone in your body. While estrogen is typically thought of as the female sex hormone, it also has other functions.
Your hormones are secreted by your endocrine system,6 and often do not act independently of each other. A report from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) offers this explanation about endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and specifically about BPA:7
"There is no end to the tricks that endocrine disruptors can play on our bodies: increasing production of certain hormones; decreasing production of others; imitating hormones; turning one hormone into another;
… [I]nterfering with hormone signaling; telling cells to die prematurely; competing with essential nutrients; binding to essential hormones; accumulating in organs that produce hormones. Unfortunately, this synthetic hormone [BPA] can trick the body into thinking it's the real thing — and the results aren't pretty.
BPA has been linked to everything from breast and other cancers to reproductive problems, obesity, early puberty and heart disease, and according to government tests, 93 percent of Americans have BPA in their bodies!"
Exposure to BPA has been linked to the following health conditions:
Structural damage to your brain, hyperactivity, increased aggressiveness and impaired learning8
Early puberty, stimulation of mammary gland development, disrupted reproductive cycles, ovarian toxicity and infertility9
Reduced quality of eggs10
High blood pressure and heart disease11,12,13
Increased risk of obesity14
Increased prostate size, decreased sperm production, hypospadias (penis deformation),15 erectile dysfunction16and stimulation of prostate cancer cells
Altered immune function17
Reduced efficacy of chemotherapy treatment19
Asthma20
Breast cancer21

Everyday Items Contain BPA

BPA can be found in many of the items you use every day. It is commonly found in shower curtains,22 plastic food storage containers, plastics that cover your meat and plastic water bottles,23 among the more common items you may come into contact with daily. The Center for Environmental Health (CEH) and Stanford researchers, in two separate studies, evaluated BPA content in canned goods. The most recent CEH study24 found 40 percent of canned goods tested had traceable amounts of BPA in the food.
The study evaluated cans produced by two of the largest grocers in the U.S. — Kroger and Albertsons/Safeway — with those from Dollar Tree and 99 Cents Only stores. They collected over 250 cans from 11 states from the four major chains and found BPA epoxies, vinyl and polyesters — all chemicals known to have negative health effects.
An independent lab tested the contents of the cans finding BPA in the product, indicating the chemical was likely migrating from the lining of the can into the food. Caroline Cox, director of research at CEH, stated:25
"These companies have known for years that BPA is a serious health threat, yet too many of their food cans still contain this dangerous chemical. Americans deserve safe food for their children and families. It is past time for grocery retailers and dollar stores to end this health threat and develop safer alternatives for canned foods."

Research From Stanford Finds Cans Have Different Amounts of BPA

Researchers from Stanford University assessed thousands of people from varying geographical areas, of different ages and socioeconomic backgrounds, evaluating dietary sources of BPA and urinary concentrations. This study found an association between the amount of canned food eaten and levels of BPA in their bodies.26
The study also found that some canned foods had far higher levels of BPA than others. According to lead author Jennifer Hartle, postdoctoral researcher at Stanford's Prevention Research Center:27 "I could eat three cans of peaches, and you could eat one can of cream of mushroom soup and have greater exposure to BPA."
Canned soups had the most BPA, followed by canned pasta. Canned fruit and vegetables had the least amount of BPA. The results confirmed the degree of influence food manufacturers have over your exposure to BPA. Hartle also led a study evaluating potential exposure school children face eating school lunches.28 Hartle commented on the results of this study:29
"During the school site visits, I was shocked to see that virtually everything in school meals came from a can or plastic packaging. Meat came frozen, prepackaged, precooked and pre-seasoned. Salads were pre-cut and pre-bagged. Corn, peaches and green beans came in cans. The only items not packaged in plastic were oranges, apples and bananas."
Hartle recommends schools begin to protect students from BPA contamination by limiting sources, but also cautions that containers labeled "BPA free" may not be a safer alternative.30 The most common replacement is BPS, which has demonstrated a similar impact on developing embryos as BPA.31

Hand Sanitizer May Amplify Absorption

Other common sources of BPA are thermal printed store receipts. And research suggests using hand sanitizer may increase the amount of BPA you absorb when handling receipts or exposed to other BPA-containing products.32
The study33 demonstrated BPA was absorbed more quickly when people used hand sanitizer before handling printed store receipts. This may be caused by a change in skin permeability triggered by hand sanitizers.34 The study indicated the increase in absorption may be as high as a factor of 100 or more.
Both dermal and sublingual absorption bypass liver metabolism, dumping toxins directly into your cells.35 The study found BPA in 44 percent of the tested receipts and BPS in 52 percent.36 As noted by Distinguished Professor Emeritus Frederick vom Saal, Ph.D., from the University of Missouri:37
"This is one of those nightmare stories where you're finding out a very commonly used [chemical] is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant, which poses quite a serious health risk."
Many of these hand sanitizers contain isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) as the active bactericidal ingredient. Some skin care products contain isopropyl alcohol as an astringent that is known to exacerbate acne38 and increase the potential to dry your skin, increasing your risk to absorb a number of different toxins from your environment.

Is There a Link Between BPA and Autism?

At a recent Healthy Child Healthy World and EWG luncheon, Dr. Harvey Karp, pediatrician and child development expert, proposed a new theory for the rising number of children diagnosed with autism or Asperger's syndrome.39 Both are part of the autism spectrum that affects four times more boys than girls.40
Karp proposes the increasing diagnoses may be related to a rapidly rising amount of BPA absorbed environmental exposure. Detractors point out that both boys and girls are exposed at the same rate, while boys are diagnosed four times more frequently than girls, which would seem to rule out an environmental factor.
However, the hormonal effect of BPA may be linked to a difference in DNA found in boys who have a higher potential to develop autism. A team of scientists found boys who had a specific genetic alteration on their X chromosome had an increased risk of developing autism.41
Boys inherit one X chromosome from their mother and one Y chromosome from their father. If their X chromosome is missing the PTCHD1 gene, they are at higher risk of developing autism. However, as girls have two X chromosomes, that appears to shield them from this genetic risk.42 While there are no current peer reviewed studies to support his theory, there are other scientists who believe further study may implicate a growing toxic load on a developing child's brain in the development of autism.

Strategies to Reduce Your Exposure to BPA

Living in an industrialized society has some definite advantages, but exposure to a multitude of toxins is not one of them. There are steps you can take to reduce your exposure and help your body eliminate the toxins you do absorb. For a list of strategies you may use to reduce your exposure to BPA and BPS, see my article, "How BPA and BPS Are Making People Sick." Further tactics you may use that support your body's efforts to detoxify and maintain optimal health include:
Eat a Nutrient-Dense Diet
Many processed foods are full of toxins, genetically engineered ingredients, trans fats, harmful vegetable oils and additives that disrupt your gut health and impact your immune system.
Processed and packaged foods are a common source of BPA and phthalates — particularly cans, but also foods packaged in plastic wrap. Real food is always your best option. Include nutrient-dense foods that are naturally anti-inflammatory and high in micronutrients that help your body detoxify, such as magnesium, B vitamins, zinc and plant polyphenols.43
Use Sustainable, Certified Organic, GMO-Free Products
Look for products that are Earth-friendly, animal-friendly, sustainable, certified organic and GMO-free. This applies to everything from food and personal care products to building materials, carpeting, paint, baby items, furniture, mattresses and more. When redoing your home, look for "green," toxin-free alternatives in lieu of regular paint and vinyl floor coverings, the latter of which are another source of phthalates. Replace your vinyl shower curtain with a fabric one. Don't use nonstick cookware.
Support Your Gut Health
Modifying your gut microbiome is an excellent long-term investment in your health and wellness. Fermented foods are the easiest, best and cheapest way you can make a significant impact on your gut microbiome.
Inoculating the food with a starter culture will speed the process and ensure you'll end up with a consistent, high-quality product that not only naturally preserves the food, allowing you to store it for several weeks, but also produces beneficial healthy bacteria to promote your gut health. Read more recommendations in my article, "How to Develop a New Gut for the New Year."
Help Your Body Detoxify
You may support your liver's ability to detoxify using four key strategies — nutrients, sweat, stress relief and sleep.44 Each of these are just as important as the others. You can read more in these previous articles:

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy cures woman of stage-4 cancer

Image: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy cures woman of stage-4 cancer
(Natural News) Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has picked up steam over the last few years as a number of studies have demonstrated that treatment’s many health benefits. In fact, the intervention was credited for the cancer remission of a New York-based woman.
Sabrina Gauer, a New York-based singer was 27 when she was diagnosed with stage-4 mouth cancer. The singer underwent intensive surgery in October 2015 to have part of her tongue removed and reconstructed to eliminate the aggressive oral squamous cell carcinoma tumor at the side of her tongue. The surgeons also removed 41 lymph nodes on the right side of her neck during the surgery that lasted six hours.
Gauer refused to undergo radiation therapy, as the intervention was associated with adverse short-term and long-term side effects such as hoarseness, difficulties in eating and drinking, dental problems and damage to the collar bone. Instead, the singer opted for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a more natural approach in order to expel the remnants of the cancer. She underwent the procedure for six weeks, and was able to preserve her voice. Now at 28 years old, Gauer has been declared cancer-free since February of 2016, 20 months after the intervention.
In line with Gauer’s story, a number of studies have also demonstrated that hyperbaric oxygen therapy alone of in combination with other treatments may show potential in cancer management. For instance, a study in Clinical Radiology revealed that combining radiotherapy with hyperbaric oxygen treatment provided relief for patients with carcinoma of the colon and the rectum. The research team also noted a tumor size regression in all patients, eight of whom attained complete regression.
Another study published in the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery showed that combined photodynamic therapy (PDT) and hyperbaric oxygen treatment resulted in reduced dysphagia-score and tumor-length in patients with carcinoma of the esophagus and the esophago-gastric junction. The researchers also noted that patients in the combination treatment had better median overall survival at 12 months, compared with the PDT group at only seven months.

This is how hyperbaric oxygen treatment works

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves sitting in a pressurized tank, which then produces oxygen for a certain period. Patients undergo the treatment several times a week over a two-month period.
“This type of method has been linked back to deep sea divers, with the heavy helmets. That’s how long ago we knew breathing good air helps your body. When you breathe oxygen under pressure, oxygen better dissolves into your blood stream and saturates into the body tissue. You need oxygen in cells for them to heal. Breathing under pressure helps get that oxygen to the cells quicker. Oxygen therapy gives the body the chance to heal itself,” Dian Brown, hyperbaric chamber technician at Jackson, Tennessee-based New Life Medical Group, explained in DailyMail.co.uk.
Hyperbaric chambers were pressurized at rates three times the normal air pressure levels. This equates to being 65 feet underwater. Exposure to a high-pressure environment prompts the lungs to gather larger volumes of oxygen. In turn, oxygen is being distributed to the rest of the body at a faster rate, accelerating the healing process.
Given its many health benefits, the use of hyperbaric oxygen treatment is poised to gain greater traction in the coming years. According to a Research and Market‘s report, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is slated to show an impressive compound annual growth rate during the forecast period 2016-2022. Increased incidence of acute and chronic wounds will play a major role in the treatment’s popularity, the report showed. (Related: Discover more news about medical cures at Cures.news.)
The report also noted that North America held 32 percent of the global market share for the intervention in 2014 alone. Europe holds the second largest global market share for hyperbaric oxygen treatment.

Study finds CBD greatly slashes seizures in severe epilepsy cases

Image: Study finds CBD greatly slashes seizures in severe epilepsy cases
(Natural News) Finally, it seems that the mainstream medical community is beginning to appreciate the significance of medical cannabis and its many medicinal uses. Recent research has shown that a compound taken from the cannabis plant, known as cannabidiol, can help to reduce the frequency of seizures in children with a severe seizure disorder, known as Dravet syndrome.
Dravet syndrome is a very rare condition caused by a genetic mutation. Afflicted children often experience multiple, prolonged seizures that can cause brain damage on a regular basis — and currently, there is no treatment for it. Often described as a severe form of epilepsy, the condition can be life-threatening.  Study author Dr. Orrin Devinsky, who is also the director of the New York University Comprehensive Epilepsy Center reportedly told NBC News, “It’s hard to portray how serious and devastating this is.”
To conduct their research, Dr. Devinsky and his team treated 120 children with Dravet syndrome with cannabidiol (CBD) or a placebo. In the study, half of the children were given a CBD supplement, while the remainder were given the placebo.
The researchers found that the CBD group exhibited a staggering 39 percent reduction in seizure frequency — and five percent of the patients stopped having seizures altogether. As the team explained in their research, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, patients in the trial who took CBD went from having an average of 12 seizures per month to about six.
“Quite remarkably, 5 percent of the children in the active treatment group with CBD were completely seizure free during the 14 weeks of the trial,” Devinsky noted.
“And these were kids who were often having dozens of seizures, if not many more than that per week,” he added.
In the study, children taking the CBD supplement were more likely to drop out due to adverse side effects, however, those side effects were generally very mild such as fever, vomiting, and fatigue. However, it is worth noting that the CBD given to these children was a single-molecule formulation created by GW Pharmaceuticals. The pharma company is hoping to have their product approved by the FDA.
“The drug we gave was derived from cannabis or marijuana but it really should not be confused with the medical marijuana that would be obtained from dispensaries in the 44 U.S. states that have approved it. Those typically contain combinations of THC with CBD and many other compounds,” Dr. Devinsky explained.
What is interesting about this aspect of the study is that past research has shown that whole-plant CBD supplements are more therapeutic than their single-molecule counterparts. A study led by researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, found that single-molecule CBD medicine has a “bell-shaped dose-response curve,” which means that there is a narrow window of efficacy for single-molecule CBD.
When analyzing the effects of a whole-plant extract, which was made from a plant the team referred to as “Clone 202,” the team found that there was no such bell curve.  The researchers state that the whole-plant CBD product “provided a clear correlation between the anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive responses and the dose, with increasing responses upon increasing doses, which makes this plant medicine ideal for clinical uses.”
These findings suggest that a CBD product made from the whole plant, which would contain many other beneficial compounds, is superior to a single-molecule CBD extract. The research team posited that this is likely because CBD acts in synergy with the other components of the cannabis plant. Furthermore, the team also found that a smaller amount of whole-plant CBD was needed to produce therapeutic effects when compared to the single-molecule product. In other words, not only was it more effective — it was more effective even in smaller doses.
These findings give cause to question whether or not synthetic single-molecule formulations are really the best option for patients looking to try CBD. While the evidence presented by Dr. Devinsky and his team is quite promising and exciting, one might wonder how much more impressive the results could have been, if a whole-plant CBD extract had been used instead of a pharmaceutical single-molecule alternative.

The REAL SCIENCE behind carbon dioxide: Plants use CO2 to create CBD, THC, curcumin and all medicinal molecules

Image: The REAL SCIENCE behind carbon dioxide: Plants use CO2 to create CBD, THC, curcumin and all medicinal molecules
(Natural News) The key accomplishment of the climate change cult (so far) has been to convince gullible environmentalists that carbon dioxide is a “pollutant” that’s somehow bad for the planet, even when CO2 is the “greening” molecule for all plant life.
Carbon dioxide is the essential molecule for all plant life, and without it, the entire web of life on our planet would instantly collapse. Yet misinformed environmentalists have been exhaustively convinced that carbon dioxide is somehow a “death” molecule for the planet, when exactly the opposite is true: The planet would die without it… and humans would have no vegetables, no fruits, no herbs and no cannabis at all if it wasn’t for carbon dioxide.
Climate change fanatics repeatedly cite “science” as their domain from which they might demand absolute compliance and obedience to their delusions. “Science,” they say, is why they never have to provide any real evidence that would support the bizarre notion that carbon dioxide is somehow bad for the planet. No debate is allowed, either, because they claim a monopoly over “science” by asserting all debates are “already settled.” Therefore, no further discussion may be tolerated. (This is the twisted, Left-wing version of science totalitarianism, courtesy of sociopathic, power hungry science overlords like Neil DeGrasse Tyson.)
In reality, every real scientist knows that carbon dioxide is essential for all plant life across the planet. As the following science diagram shows, carbon dioxide is necessary for plants to breathe. Without it, they would suffocate in minutes:

Plants use carbon dioxide to create CBD, THC, vitamin C and anti-cancer nutrients like curcumin

Not only is carbon dioxide necessary for all plant respiration via photosynthesis, it’s also the key ingredient used by plants to synthesize nearly every medicinal molecule that’s loved by herbalists, natural medicine practitioners and even medical cannabis advocates.
All cannabinoids are made out of carbon dioxide, for example. This includes CBD and THC. For those of you who aren’t chemists, every line segment in the molecular maps shown below represents a carbon bond. Double lines are double carbon bonds. Carbon atoms have four available bonds in their outer shell, and those bonds may be occupied by Oxygen (often a double bond), Hydrogen (a single bond) or other Carbon atoms. (Related: Learn more about chemistry by reading Chemistry.news.)
There are 21 carbons, for example, in a molecule of cannabidiol. Guess where the hemp plant gets this carbon? From carbon dioxide, of course, which all the hemp-smoking Leftists are convinced is an evil molecule:

Despite the fact that cannabidiol comes from carbon dioxide, climate change cultists are simultaneously “pro hemp” and “anti carbon dioxide.” How can this be the case? Because they are science idiots who have been brainwashed by the liberal establishment to despise the very molecule that creates nearly all the natural medicines in the world.
Anyone who hates carbon dioxide must, by definition, hate CBD, THC and all plants. Yet, astonishingly, climate change cultists think they support “green lifestyles” by opposing the very molecule necessary for all plant life on our planet. That’s how gullible and brainwashed they are: They’ll believe anything if it is claimed to “save the planet” (even if it murders the planet).

Curcumin from turmeric root is also made out of carbon dioxide

Curcumin, a powerful anti-cancer nutrient found in turmeric, is also made from carbon dioxide. As you can see in this molecular diagram, it’s made from 21 carbons. Where do you suppose the turmeric plant acquires the carbon it needs to manufacture this molecule? From atmospheric carbon dioxide, of course, the very molecule that delusional climate change fanatics have said they want to eliminate from the planet because it’s a “pollutant.”
In fact, nearly every medicinal molecule in all of botany is made out of carbon dioxide. CO2 is the key source of carbon used by plants to synthesize everything from chlorophyll to resveratrol. Every healing nutrient in basil, oregano, cinnamon, cilantro, garlic and pomegranate fruit is made out of carbon dioxide. The entire world of natural medicine owes its very basis to CO2.
This is why every herbalist, naturopath and medicinal arts practitioner should be in favor of carbon dioxide. Without this molecule, they would all be out of business (and dead, technically, since all life on the planet would collapse).

The real SCIENCE of carbon dioxide proves this molecule is the answer to a greener planet

Every person who argues that carbon dioxide is bad for the planet is a science idiot. Neil Tyson is a science idiot. Bill Nye is a science idiot. Elon Musk is a science idiot. And Al Gore is a science idiot, too. They all have one laughably stupid thing in common: They think carbon dioxide is bad for plant life on Earth. This makes them total morons who couldn’t even pass a high school science class.
Seriously, they would all earn “F” grades in a high school science class because they can’t even get the answer correct on which molecules are involved in photosynthesis.
I remember studying photosynthesis in the tenth grade. I was 16 years old, and my science teacher was an awesome, liberty-loving gun owner who later taught us genetics and microbiology. Photosynthesis was simple stuff then, and it’s simple now. Yet the global warming lunatics are trying to memory hole all science education that covers carbon dioxide or genetics because they have to push their delusional narratives of global warming and transgenderism. Somehow, they ridiculously claim to have a monopoly over “science,” even when their stupid narratives are so full of junk science quackery that real scientists are laughing their heads off everywhere.
The bottom line in all this? Any person who insists that carbon dioxide is “bad” for the planet is a scientifically illiterate moron. These are often the very same people drinking green juice smoothies who don’t even know that plants are green precisely because chlorophyll harnesses carbon dioxide and sunlight to create plant energy. If any molecule is a “green” molecule on our planet, it’s CO2!
