Glyphosate in Breakfast Cereal But US EPA Postpones Review
These best-sellers were reportedly found to contain higher than average traces of glyphosate – a widely used weedkiller used on commercially genetically modified (GM) crops. The results were uncovered by campaigning groups Food Democracy Now and The Detox Project. According to the report, the herbicide residues were found in cookies, crackers, popular cold cereals and chips commonly consumed by children and adults.
Dave Murphy, Executive Director of Food Democracy Now described the findings as “alarming and should be a wake-up call for any parent trying to feed their children safe, healthy and non-toxic food”.
It comes after Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) postponed hearings last month, which were due to explore glyphosate’s link to cancer in humans. Glyphosate has been under the spotlight since World Health Organisation sparked a firestorm when cancer experts classified it as a “probable human carcinogen”, last year.

US EPA Delays Glyphosate Review in Bow to Big Ag – VIA GM Watch: The US EPA has announced new dates for its glyphosate cancer review meetings: 13-16 December. The EPA has capitulated to CropLife (a Monsanto- and industry-funded group) and removed the epidemiologist Dr Peter Infante from the review panel. CropLife had specifically demanded that EPA remove Dr Infante. CropLife said it wanted Dr Infante off glyphosate cancer review panel in part because he might favor independent research over industry-funded studies. http://gmwatch.org/news/latest-news/17321
